The AirTag will get a major update addressing the stalking issue

Apple just updated their AirTags, addressing a primary issue plaguing users for months, and that's stalking. Once the update is enabled, users can detect when an unknown AirTag is nearby. The Air tag is unfortunately used for nefarious acts, including stalking, and some criminal-minded individuals planted AirTags in cars they intended to steal. The new update will make it difficult for anyone to misuse the device.

Ironically, it took an investigated report published in The Washington Post, entailing how Apple AirTags is used to stalk individuals. Since the article was published, the company has been scrutinized for not taking the issue seriously. The AirTags is a practical device that can track lost keys and recover stolen backpacks. But, unfortunately, Air Tags is a literal tracking device for the bad guys.

Apple is addressing the issue with the latest firmware update, 2.0.24, which includes a Precision Finding feature and fixes the accelerometer bug.

According to Apple, the Precision Finding feature will help users " locate an unknown AirTag," detecting one moving along with you. A notification will be sent when the AirTag is separated from the owner traveling in unison. Once the device is located, it will emit a noticeably loud beeping sound making it easier to find the device.

In addition to Precision Finding Feature, the update addresses the Air Tags accelerometer bug. The fix will accurately detect if the AirTag is unknowingly moving with you.

The new features will not be available for Android users who use the AirTag with their smartphones. Instead, you'll have to download a third-party app, Air Guard, which offers similar security features.

The AirTag is probably one of the best accessories made by Apple. The device inspired me to purchase something similar ( Chipolo) for my Android smartphone. So it baffled me when I discovered the device is being used for unintended purposes, which includes stalking. Though it took Apple a while to address this issue, there is finally a firmware update.
