Let's talk about Apple's new entry-level USB-C charging Apple Pencil
I predicted Apple would follow up their iPhone 15 with USB-C charging accessories. The insight is accurate. The company just announced an all-new entry-level Apple Pencil with cheaper USB-C charging, costing $79.99. The device comes with a sliding cap that reveals the actual USB-C port. Magnetically, it can attach to the side edge of an iPad. It can even attach to the 10th-generation variant released by Apple last year.
There is a caveat to the cheap price—the Pencil minuses some advanced features, as seen on the first and second-generation models. There is no support for pressure sensitivity, wireless pairing, charging, or a double-tap feature that lets users switch between tools. However, the Pencil still offers hover support with M2 iPad Pro models.
Apple's Pencil had its issues before Apple made improvements to the device. The first generation device used a Lightning connector that obtruded outward to plug into the iPad's port for charging. The second-generation model charged wirelessly but wasn't compatible with the 10th-generation iPad. Limiting options for any consumer who wants to purchase the Stylus Pencil.
The new Apple Pencil with USB-C is compatible with the following iPads: the third to sixth-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the first to fourth-generation 11-inch iPad Pro, the fourth and fifth-generation iPad Air, the 10th-gen iPad, and the sixth-gen iPad Mini.
The availability date for the USB-C Apple Pencil will be in early November.
