AirPods Pro Firmware Update Fiasco Explained
According to Techopedia ( an actual website), the definition of Firmware is a software program permanently etched into a hardware device such as a smartphone, hard drive, BIOS, or video cards. It is programmed to give permanent instructions to communicate with other devices and perform functions like basic input/output tasks. The sole purpose of having firmware updates is to eradicate bugs and improve performance. With that said, this brings us to the topic at hand. The AirPod Pro firmware update issue let me explain.
On Dec 16th, 2020, Apple rolled out the 2C54 firmware update to its AirPods Pro. It was supposedly bringing significant improvements to sound accuracy. Instead, many users discovered a reduction in sound isolation. Causing AirPod Pro users to go on Reddit and post written complaints.
In response to all the consumer outrage, RTINGS, which is a product testing website decided to retest the wireless headphones. Stating that the 2C54 update does make some " fairly significant improvements."
Those improvements being bass accuracy and other features. But a significant number of users did notice a big change to noise reduction. According to RTINGS, after putting the AirPod Pro through a battery of tests, they concluded that the 2C54 update bought a "fairly significant drop in isolation performance," particularly affecting the bass-range.
Apple has yet to address the barrage of complaints from the consumers. Instead, they pulled the entire 2C54 update. This thwarts additional users from installing the update. Apple takes a rather stealthy approach to updating the AirPods and AirPods Pro, with the entire installation process taking place in the background.
If you are one many AirPods Pro owners and not sure if your headphones received the update, follow these instructions. Settings-General-About on your iPhone, then look for the "AirPods Pro" tab once the wireless connection established.
You probably noticed big changes to noise isolation. If so, patiently wait for Apple to rectify this problem. Apple pulling entire the update signifies a new firmware updates should soon follow.
