Apple launches their new m2 pro and m2 max soc, here's what you need to know
Apple has officially launched their new MacBook Pros and Mac Minis using an all-new SoC, M2 Pro, and M2 Max. It's more potent than the M2 MacBook Air model released last year. Let's go in-depth; here's what you need to know.
According to Apple, the M2 Pro is a "scaled up" from the M2, offering users 10 or 12 more CPU cores and up to 10 GPU cores. The 12-core configuration will have eight performing cores and four efficiency cores. In comparison, the M2 processor in the MacBook Air is embedded with just 8 CPU cores and 10 GPU cores. In addition, with the M2 Pro, you can pair as much as 32GB of unified memory.
As claimed by Apple, the 12-core M2 Pro is 20 percent faster than the 10-core variant of the M1 Pro in multi-threaded applications. In addition, the 19-core GPU is three times faster than M1 Pro's GPU and 20 percent faster in overall performance.
Apple stated in real-world performance the 16-inch MacBook with the M2 Pro processor is 25 percent faster than its predecessor M1 Pro while compiling in Xcode (Xcode is an integrated environment for macOS used to develop software).
The M2 Max is the flagship version of SoC, having an identical 12-core CPU to the M2 Pro, doubling the number of GPU cores times 2 equaling 38. In addition, as expected, performance is enhanced doubled the amount of unified memory bandwidth, up to 400 GB/s, compared to the M2 Pro 200 GB/s. As a result, the overall graphics performance is 30 percent faster than the M1 Max.
The M2 Pro and M2 Max are constructed on a 5nm process node, embedded with 40 billion transistors and 67 billion transistors. Both processors have the same 16-core Neural Engine capable of executing 16 trillion operations per second. In addition, other features include an increased version of the Secure Enclave security platform and a more robust media engine.
Regarding availability, the M2 Pro will be in the refreshed Mac Mini, 14-inch MacBook Pro, and 16-inch MacBook Pro. The M2 Max will only be available in the all-new MacBook Pros. These devices are expected to ship on January 24th. Apple is now accepting pre-orders.
It’s worth noting the new 14-inch M2 Pro MacBookPro retail start price is $1,999 or $1,849 for students. The M2 Pro Nax 16-inch MacBook Pro retail start price for students is $2,499 or $2,299 for students.
