Let's talk about Sony's new Aftermarket PS5 SSD

What we have here from Sony is on paper a very powerful aftermarket SSD explicitly for the PS5 gaming console, but the drive itself is under the Nextorage Brand. The SSD has caught many such as me by surprise since just three days prior; Sony has made it official and now supports third-party SSD upgrades on the PS5. Two companies have already launched SSD designed solely for the current generation console. Still, the Nextorage PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD is a unique piece of hardware that promises high-peak performance.

Better known as "NEM-PA series, the SSDs will come in two storage options, 1TB and 2TB. But, here's where it gets exciting, the Nextorage read/write rates for the 2TB SSD are insane, 7,300/6,900 MB/s of sequential read/write speed, the random read and write performance can reach an astounding 1 million IOPS. Regarding Longevity, the 2TB NEM-PA rated for 1,400 TBW, with a total of 2GB of DDRAM caching.

With the 1TB option, performance levels off slightly, which is expected. The sequential read/write speed comes in at 7,300/6,000 MB/s, while random read speed has a 750,000 IOPS rating. Random write performance is 1 million IOPs, much like the 2TB option. When it comes to Longevity, the NEM-PA 1TB is rated at 700 TBW.

Both storage capacities have a Sony-approved heatsink for drop-in upgrades to the PS5's integrated SSD when it comes to design. Currently, there is no information from Sony as to when the new Nextorage SSD's will be available for consumers, nor do we have a listed price. However, we will post an update when it becomes available.
