How to properly install your new webcam

You're probably asking yourself how is something so mundane as installing a webcam the topic of this tutorial. Believe it or not, you'll be surprised how many people face issues installing a new webcam.

So yes, simple as this tutorial seems, I will show you how to install your webcam CORRECTLY.

First, like any device, read the webcam's manual before you begin the installation process. The manual will include the listed specs, compatible software, and an instruction guide.

Plug it into the correct port, please

Like most USB-compatible devices, webcams are PnP ( Plug and Play). What is PnP? It's a hardware feature that automatically enables computers to detect and configure devices without user intervention.

Depending on the brand webcam, it should be compatible with the latest Gen USB port. Attach the cable to the webcam, then carefully, I mean it with emphasis, plug the webcam into the USB port. Once plugged in, your Windows operating system (or macOS) should recognize the webcam. It's now ready for operation.

Install the software and the drivers.

Webcams typically come with software and drivers. The software includes features that allow users to adjust the focus and resolution. The software also features the latest device drivers. If needed, update the drivers to the webcam. Users can also download the webcam drivers from the manufacturer’s website.

Put it to the test and enjoy

Now is the time to test out your new webcam. Windows 10 or 11 have built-in webcam software. Press the Windows key on your keyboard, which will bring up the Start Menu, then type the word “camera” until the app appears in the search results. Once the app is opened, the webcam immediately captures an image. An indication the device is ready for operation. The next step is the test the audio, click the record button( the round icon), record for a few seconds, then click again to finish recording. To check the recording, click the Camera roll shortcut in the bottom-right corner of the Camera app and play the video from there.

If the recording includes video and audio, your new webcam is working.

Enjoy your new webcam.
